Are you getting hugely over-weight? Are you already diabetic? Are you on prescribed medications for diabetes and still overweight? Have you considered that something is not working if that is the case?

If your diet and lifestyle is high in refined sugars and carbohydrates, trans fats, animal fats, non-organic foods, processed foods, white flours, junk foods, lack of sleep, and watching too much TV, then you are on the road to reaping the consequences of the very dangerous disease diabetes. This is especially true if you have the epigenetic markers for diabetes. These days too many people eat for convenience. 

Well as Dr. Gabriel Cousens says, "It's not convenient to get diabetes and heart disease!" So when I got notified that I had developed this disease it made me stop in my tracks! I had seen the effects up close and personal in my own family. It was time for a big change, and believe me it can be a good thing when pain helps motivate us to change! Dr.Gabriel Cousens along with Dr.Joel Fuhrman were the medical professionals that inspired my changes. I highly recommend Dr. Cousens updated book There Is a Cure for Diabetes, Revised Edition: The 21-Day+ Holistic Recovery Program and Dr.Joel Fuhrman's updated Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, Revised Edition and as well as his book The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes . 

It is through the guidance and knowledge of these two doctors phenomenal health information that I formulated what I should be eating to get my body healthy and reverse disease. As a bonus result I also lost 76 pounds in weight. I am not hungry, and I love to eat! That is why I have included the overviews of the doctors who influenced my choices among the list of subjects on this diabetic tips page. You can prevent disease and you can reverse diabetes!

Dr. Joel Fuhrman promotes health through 'Nutrient Dense' eating to reverse disease including diabetes. When we consume foods with the highest micro-nutrient density per calorie, in green vegetables, colorful vegetables, and fruits, we will create optimal health and fight disease. Together micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals), macro nutrients (fat, carbohydrate, and protein) and avoidance of toxic foods (trans fats and sodium) heal the body and protect against disease. Dr.Fuhrman calls those who follow his eating lifestyle Nutritarians. A vegan diet high in starchy vegetables and grains like rice, potatoes, wheat, would not be Nutritarian, as those foods do not have high nutrient density, and are too low in nutrients to reverse disease or maximize longevity. It is not enough to be low glycemic in your food choices, you must also choose to eat the highest quality foods. Diabetes ages the body harming the kidneys, the nervous system, the eyes, and increases your cancer risk. There is much to repair in the body if you have diabetes.

Dr. Fuhrman goes on the record to state you will not be hungry on a diet rich in green vegetables, beans, mushrooms, onions, berries, eggplant, tomato, garlic, raw nuts, and seeds. I agree as this is the way I eat now. He believes in the value of green juices, and green smoothies, which he calls 'liquid salads.' He views them as the perfect vehicle to get that high volume of nutrient dense veggies in you, and highly recommends you make the salad the main meal of your day. His feels that meat should be a condiment in your life, not the focus of your plate, so he does not say everyone should become a total vegan. It is according to the individual patient needs. Since everyone is different in their requirements according to their genetic weakness, someone like me who has had a cancer diagnosis along with a number of diseases must not eat meat and dairy. That is because my body cannot handle the inflammation that meat and dairy causes within the body. He advocates that if you have 'serious disease,' that you have to 'get serious' about the way you eat. He is also a former Olympic athlete who views exercise and proper sleep as key components of a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Fuhrman is not only a doctor but also a researcher, who is conducting studies about the effects of food on breast cancer. He has a strong belief in the science and facts behind proper food choices. He has a high rate of reversing diabetes in his patients and with the public at large who follow the Nutritarian lifestyle. I have become a member and patient of Dr. Fuhrman Associates, and I believe in his passion for healing the body through nutritional excellence

Gabriel Cousens M.D. calls diabetes 'accelerated aging.' It is caused by an imbalance of insulin, leptin, and genetically activated lethal inflammation. He states the foods with the highest inflammatory effects are fish (which is the highest), meat, and chicken. Dr.Cousens who has reversed Diabetes in numerous patients within 3 weeks, calls today's modern lifestyle 'The Culture of Death,' and he recommends that we get back to a 'Culture of Life!' I certainly agree!

Gabriel Cousens M.D. believes that the plant based vegan diet, sourced with organic whole natural fresh 'live foods' that are low in carbohydrates, is the optimum way to eat for a diabetic. Omega-3's are very important for diabetics, so you need to eat the healthy plant fats found in avocados, nuts, and seeds. To balance your life and body systems it is best to shift to total alignment by applying a organic whole foods diet, utilizing conscious eating thoughts, sleep, yoga, moderate exercise, and meditation. A very important baseline for sleep is 7-8 hours of a night. Less time spent sleeping compromises the endocrine system and you will get a 10 point increase in blood sugar, among other problems from lack of sleep. Dr.Cousens advocates you value the energetic part of food, which are the natural vibrations coming from your food, and be appreciative of what you are eating. He suggests that you eat protein according to your personal constitution, as everyone has different needs. Although he prescribes that you get your complex carbohydrates and protein from plant sources. He puts forward that you make low glycemic choices, and that the food must be organic to negate the effects of pesticides and heavy metals on insulin resistance.

Avoid all carbohydrates, except leafy greens, nonstarchy and fibrous vegetables, sea vegetables, and sprouts. Avoid all grains, white flours, sugars and sweeteners (except stevia and birch-tree, natural xylitol. Eat 22 - 55% plants and greens. 22-35% from plant complex carbs. You can eat as much of all the veggies you would like, and less of the starchy veggies like potatoes, carrots and beets. Eating more live (uncooked) plant foods will turn on anti-aging, anti-inflammation, and anti-cancer activity. So eat a large amount of raw vegetables including 25 - 45% plant based whole raw fats (avocados, nuts, and seeds). Adequate fats are needed for your nervous system, brain, and cell membranes. Eat 25 - 45% plant protein according to your constitution. Dr. Cousens stresses that everyone's need for protein is different and is according to their genes. You must individualize your protocol as you are unique. Be sure to get adequate hydration from water as well. It is so important to take into consideration your own alignment of natural flow, consciousness, and your connection to Spirit. Dr.Cousens takes into account your whole being in his healing protocol.

Gabriel Cousens M.D. feels dairy from cow's, youth immunizations, vaccinations, and some viral infections create Type One Diabetes. He is at this time able to reverse 21% percent of type one diabetics. They are still researching type one diabetes at his center, and he is hoping soon to work with some Universities. It does not take long to change the way you eat, if you do the research on what you really have been eating, and then change the way you think! This website is my reaction to learning the truth of fake food, the medical problems it causes, and what we can do about it ourselves. We have learned the good news about healing ourselves with high quality nutrient dense foods, and the bad news about the sick, sad diet we are sold in modern supermarkets. Processed foods made of fat, sugar, salt, chemicals, MSG, and GMO's mixed together are just a cocktail of disease on a plate. There is nothing of value for us in those fake food stuffs. After I started making green juices, and filling up by eating big salads everyday, it was only two weeks till I no longer had a daily craving for sugar loaded pastries or carbs. Believe me I grew up loving ooey gooey desserts, but now just looking at them makes me cringe. They have no pull on me, because when your taste buds come back from the "trip they were on," sugars, and over salted processed foods actually have no taste.

Processed food specialists add all that 'junk to their junk' because that 'stuff' really is fake, has no real flavor, let alone real nutrient value! I much prefer to get my sweetness from fruits and vegetables now, which have super good nutrition built into them, instead of those empty calories that kill. The only thing I crave now is very dark chocolate, and I have a small square or two, nearly every day. It's actually good for you! Yea! Okay I admit I still love my blue chips and salsa too, but now it's homemade or organic salsa and chips! See I did not give up everything. Don't be scared off that you cannot eat like this! It is so easy because it tastes delicious! It is true these new foods taste far far better than the old dead foods. My husband and I crave the healthy foods now. It was only a month or two of eating this way till I started to feel quite good! I was one sick puppy! Looking back... changing my food, changed my life! It is just that simple!

I came from a family with a history of diabetes. It was the cause of my grandfathers death, they kept misdiagnosing his insulin shock as strokes during his last years. My father died from the complications of diabetes as well, with congestive heart failure. Like many diabetics his legs and feet had become so numb he could not walk. This is because he could not feel them any longer. An uncle died from diabetes as well. I developed gestational diabetes when I was pregnant. So you see I do have the genetics for the big D.  
I was not aware you could totally reverse diabetes, and heal most other diseases by simply eating this way! It was after being inspired by watching Gabriel Cousins M.D. in "Simply Raw," and Dr.Joel Fuhrman along with Joe Cross, in "Fat Sick And Nearly Dead," that I reversed my own Type II Diabetes! I lowered my A1C and blood glucose levels in three months! My daily blood sugar reading after nine months was 87. I was able to stop taking Metformin immediately by eating a plant strong diet, which included drinking fresh made green juices, and mostly live whole organic plant foods. I ate and still eat, mainly salads, soups, green veggies, colorful veggies, including fruits in my green smoothies too! I had until recently eaten Wild Alaskan Salmon or sardines about once a month, so I would not technically be called a vegan during that time. I do not believe in labels for how I eat, as I am doing the best I can to eat the nutrient dense live organic whole foods. I did speak with my endocrinologist about the food changes I was making so we could go over my protocol for healing and removing my various medications as time went by. 

I highly recommend that if you are on insulin, that you speak with your doctor first. Let them know about your plan to make the food changes, so they can adjust your medications accordingly. You do not want to be over medicating the body either. It will need to be a team effort in the beginning. Be sure to have a medical professional that will work with you on your plan to get healthy! It is a continual process of learning to make the changes needed to change one's food lifestyle, although those of us with disease must move quicker through our transition out of the old processed foods paradigm. When you start to feel better and notice your skin start glowing, the smile will return to your face! Your magnificent improvements will keep you going on your healthy journey! I would like to mention to that since Fukushima there is too much radiation in the Pacific, and I am not comfortable with eating fish or seaweed from that ocean. Now I have also learned that fish has the most inflammatory effects on the body, so it would be rare if I have any fish into the future. It is also important to know that it has been found that insulin levels and cholesterol levels are improved when people eliminate GMO (Genetically Modified) foods from their diet as I have done. Getting rid of the toxins and chemicals from processed foods and sweeteners made a huge improvement in my health. Organic whole natural live plant foods are the healing foods that make the difference. Processed foods are empty with no nutrition to heal and fuel the body. That is why you are hungry all the time, when those fake foods are the items you choose to eat. Your body is saying, "Feed me Seymore!" Have fun with food too! We love food shopping. farmers markets, good restaurants, and green juice bars. Cashew cream in veggie dishes is divine! Avocados are my new non-guilty pleasure! So many new choices to enjoy are waiting for you!

It has been a rewarding joyful experience to go from a sickly overweight person, to a vibrant person that lives a normal life! I have continued to lose weight slowly over the past two years, and as a hypo-thyroid patient that has been amazing. My new problem is having to buy smaller clothes! Now that really feels good! Instead of going to doctors multiple times every week, I now only go in for check ups! More time for living!

(IMPORTANT! It is advised that eating foods that reduce your blood sugar, while you are still taking Diabetes medication, should be done with caution. Let your Doctor know that you have made a decision to change what you eat. If you need to reduce your medication, your doctor can advise, and tailor it to your individual medical issues and concerns.)

It has been found that Diabetic and also those people with thyroid problems may also have a problem with inflammation happening after meals. Inflammation spikes your insulin levels and you need to find ways to reduce this effect in order to calm your blood sugar down. If you get tired after eating your meals this is a sign that you are experiencing inflammation. Try eating smaller meals and waiting one to two hours before eating the rest of your meal. Do burst exercise 4 times a day for a minute or so. This is the type of exercise that gets you out of breath. Eliminating grains and dairy help to get rid of the inflammation response in many people too.

Organic whole foods - To get healthy and detoxify your body the foods you ingest must be free of pesticides, fungicides, GMO's, MSG, fat, sugar, salt, and chemicals. Processed foods must start to be eliminated from your life. Yes, there will still be some you will use, but they will be limited and organic. Making the switch to foods as they were grown, from a tree, bush, or plant keeps all the nutrients alive. Those enzymes are a key to healing your body of disease.

Raw vegetables and fruits  - The more of these that you incorporate into your daily food intake the better you will be! Watch the film 'Simply Raw' with Dr Gabriel Cousins. More on that film below.

Juicing - Try juicing fresh organic vegetables and drink a glass everyday! You will take in more veggies than you could eat in one sitting. Just make sure it is a green juice with very limited fruit. Go to my 'Juicing Page tab' above. This page also has some recipes and info.

Up Your Fiber - Soluble fiber slows sugar absorption. Drink green smoothies filled with leafy greens! Add more high fiber foods to your diet, raw greens, raw veggies, steel cut oats, rye, peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits, carrots, barley, chia, flax seed, buckwheat, turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens, eggplant, raspberries, and cinnamon. Whole grain rye has special pytonutrients that help with diabetes. High fiber foods help normalize blood glucose levels by slowing the rate at which food leaves the stomach and by delaying the absorption of glucose following a meal. Ceylon Cinnamon - Compounds in cinnamon can stimulate your cells' insulin receptors, increasing the cells' ability to absorb and use glucose. Unfortunately the common cassia cinnamon that does this has toxins in it. Ceylon cinnamon is the safe cinnamon, but does not have the glucose lowering effect. Still there are other great qualities contained in Ceylon cinnamon that make it worth ingesting about 1 tsp a day. Sprinkle on hot or cold cereals, sliced fruit or add 1/2 tsp to your morning smoothie as I do. If cinnamon is to be used regularly it must be true Ceylon cinnamon from Sri Lanka, because the common cassia cinnamon used in America contains too much cancer causing coumarin. Reishi Mushroom - safeguards liver function and aids in lowering blood sugar. Mushroom extracts are available to get the amounts needed. Check out Fungi Perfecti.

Turmeric - Another readily available spice that aids in the reversal of diabetes, you can read the article about a recent study here. Turmeric also aids in liver function and fights Alzheimer's. Use turmeric in your soups, stews, and other dishes  I add about a 1/4 tsp turmeric to my morning smoothie every day. This article talks about all the amazing qualities found in Turmeric. Nuts and seeds -  Eat a two ounce mixture of raw almonds, pistachios, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, peanuts, cashews and macadamias everyday instead of white flour carbohydrates. Nuts can reduce blood glucose and LDL levels.Check out this recipe!

Dark Chocolate - Chocolate of 70% cocoa or more, can lower blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, and raises good cholesterol levels, when eaten in moderation. Eat no more than 50 grams. I usually eat about 20 grams.

Jerusalem Artichokes or Sun-chokes - The Jerusalem artichoke is a member of the sunflower family with edible tubers. They resemble tiny potatoes, but are more like a crunchy water chestnut. It is said that eaten often they help to reduce blood sugar levels in Diabetics. They also produce friendly bacteria for the colon, and can change the PH which can kill yeast infections. Helps with absorption of calcium, reduced triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol. Slice thin and add to salads, or cook like potatoes.

Cauliflower - Known for helping to block cancer cell growth, and reducing cardiovascular disease. Cauliflower is also shown to be helpful in modulating chronic inflammation and reducing the risk for diabetes. High in vitamin C and potassium it also helps lower risk for Rheumatoid arthritis if eaten at least three times a month.

Holy Basil - Reduces circulating blood glucose levels and inflammation. Helps fight disease, germs and cancer. Contains qualities which help the entire body to function better. Read more here.

Parsley - has been found to be helpful with blood sugar reduction. Only consume and juice in smaller amounts as it is high in oxalite acid. Rich in Vitamin K and antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin A and C.

American Ginseng - New research as of 2015 is to take this with your meal to possibly reduce Type II diabetes. Check out article here.

Tangerines - New research has found that the white part of the Tangerine contains a substance called Nobilitin that helps fight against Diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Eat and juice some tangerines to get this powerful protection. See article here.

Berries - Help reduce the body's glucose response after eating a high sugar meal.

Dandelions - A very misunderstood plant, because Dandelion is a powerhouse of nutrition.It ranks in the top four of green vegetables for overall nutrition. Dandelion greens detoxify the liver, and just a small handful in your homemade vegetable juice, or in a salad is extremely beneficial. Read article here. I use dandelion daily in my juice as my dark leafy green, since as a thyroid patient I should not be exclusively juicing kale and spinach. Buy the large organic dandelion greens, or grow your own. Common dandelions are much smaller and bitter, although they are all edible. Never eat any dandelions from a lawn that gets pesticides or from along the roadside. Common Dandelions are less bitter when small in the early spring, and when found in shady areas.The flowers and stems are also edible and people make wine from those parts.

Chia seeds - Add this power packed seed to many recipes! Full of protein, fiber and omega - 3, Chia Seeds are an effective aid to healthy weight loss too. The fiber rich chia seeds and slowly metabolized carbs can help to curb the appetite and has been shown to help lose weight when included with a balanced and healthy diet. Chia contains more Antioxidants Than Blueberries, has Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, and reduces the "Bad" (LDL) Cholesterol. The recommended amount of chia is two tablespoons a day. Konjac Root - Also known as Elephant Yam, Glucomannan, is a water soluble dietary fiber that comes in capsules. You take 1 gram in a tall glass of water one hour before mealtime. Helps with diabetes and high cholesterol. Listen to Dr. Mark Hyman talk about this fiber here it's the last video on page. Article here.

The Low Chain Omega 3's

Avocados, Flax, Chia- low chain Omega 3's that are very important for diabetics.  Your need the healthy fats for your brain and nervous system. See info on chia above.

Purslane - Known as a weed in the U.S., it is actually edible and eaten in Europe. Full of low chain Omega 3's. If you make kidney stones avoid using as this is high in oxalates.

E3 Live - Has the low chain omega 3's but is not for everyone. You must do your research on this product which is a form of algae. Generally people with auto-immune disease, are pregnant or nursing, should not ingest algae. Click on link here to find out what this product is about. I do not take 'E3 Live' as I have an auto-immune thyroid disease.

Eliminate GMO products, unfortunately they are not labeled! So see my GMO page for more info. No refined white flour products (bagels, croissants, breads, pastries, white pasta, regular pizza), sodas, diet sodas, mangoes, melon, raisins, fruit juices, white rice, sugar, and sweetened products (high fructose corn syrup). Reduce white potato intake. Reduce convenience and processed foods and eat more whole organic foods. If you do eat grains make sure they are marked "whole grain' but stay away from wheat. Wheat products will raise your blood sugar higher than sugar! Does not matter if it is whole wheat or refined wheat. Yes it causes belly fat, or wheat belly. No processed foods because wheat and GMO's are in nearly all of them including candy, soup, soy sauce, and frozen foods. (There is a withdrawal from wheat because it is a form of opiate. Lasts about five days, and you may get headaches.) Also avoid products with corn starch, and tapioca starch. Be wary of products labeled gluten-free because they are usually junk food carbohydrates. Look out for all the forms of MSG. Eat plant strong whole foods.
Why white bread may be giving you diabetes.

No fried foods and no fast food. In restaurants ask what is in your food. Plan to go to restaurants that use organic local sources for their food supplies. Ask questions always!

No chemical sweeteners! This is a huge business and they will lie to keep profits over health. Do not believe that chemical alternatives are safe for diabetics! This includes Splenda! Aspartame also known as Nutra-Sweet and Equal is a known toxin. Splenda is also known as sucralose and is beginning to show the same health problems as aspartame. These chemicals are in thousands of products, so you must read labels. Artificial sweeteners can actually induce glucose intolerance in some people thus inducing conditions of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. it does this through inhibiting the gut bacteria making the body unable to metabolize glucose. Please watch the films below called 'Sweet Misery' and 'Sweet Remedy.'  If you cannot go without putting a sweetener in your coffee or tea, please try using Stevia, which is not a chemical and comes from a green growing plant, not a plant made of cement. Your gut health is so very important.

If you are going to succeed with changing the way that you eat, it is extremely important especially if you are diabetic, have sugar intolerance, heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure, that you now become addicted to documentaries instead of the old ways of eating food. At least watch the films listed on this page that specifically have info on diabetes. Knowledge is the biggest help to inspiring us! Simply Raw - film about reversing Diabetes with diet in 30 days. Life changing! This documentary follows six diabetes patients on their journey to reverse diabetes with food under the direction of Dr. Gabriel Cousins. This film shows the struggles some have with food, but also shows it can be done! You may not choose to go completely raw, but getting to 80-90 percent plant based diet will change your life! It has changed my life completely as I too have reversed Diabetes and improved other body functions with plants. 

Check your library for a copy or buy the DVD. It is not usually available to watch for free online, so maybe you can watch it here, but when the movie ends turn it off, as someone added a strange overzealous film about Jesus at the end.

Fat Sick and Nearly Dead - Another very important documentary that shows changing your food lifestyle can reverse chronic disease. Just when you think this film is ending, it is just beginning! Stick with this one, as this is the film that got me making the big changes! The film has created a free support community with helpful information to get you started! A must see! You can watch it here on their site for free, or on Netflix streaming.

Chow Down  - A hard look at the way Americans eat, with the result being  blocked arteries and heart attacks. Surgeries and prescriptions are a band-aid not a cure. Food cures and reverses disease if patients are willing to make the change to a plant based diet. Some of the people talk about how they don't like the taste of the new way of eating in this film. We have not found that to be true. I recommend you follow food blogs with healthy delicious recipes. Also look at my 'Substitution page tab' above to learn about new choices too! We enjoy making the new foods as well as finding new restaurants that serve vegetarian and healthy menus. See it as a food adventure! We got a copy of this film from the library, or you can rent or buy the DVD. The bonus interviews Are especially informative and worth watching!

Big Sugar - The history of how sugar was the oil of the past. Causing wars, disputes, slave trade, and influence in governments. You will see the methods they used to fool the consumers and public then, are the same ones used by many industries today. The influence and use of slave workers continues to this day, with only three companies controlling the worlds sugar. The largest sugar plantation owners live in Florida. Shown in two parts, this documentary discusses the modern day problems with the over use of sugar in most products consumed, which is contributing to diabetes and obesity. In a system where their is a pay off to get soda machines into schools, and lobbyists fighting any legislation to curb the use of sugar, it can be difficult to avoid. But it can be done. I think it is important for sugar intolerant people to watch this film in it's entirety. You can watch this one free online.

Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World - Excellent documentary showing how dangerous artificial sweetener Aspartame is.
